Inside the strip-mall gurdwara in the D.C. suburbs, Ghazala F. Hashmi snaked through the winding line of people sitting cross-legged in this Sikh house of worship.

The state delegate leading her through, JJ Singh (D-Loudoun), introduced Hashmi – a Democrat seeking to becomer Viriginia’s lieutenant govenor – the same way to each one.

“She’d be the first Indian to hold statewide office in the entire state,” Singh said, crouching down to greet one woman eating lunch.

She would also notch an even bigger first if she wins Tuesday’s election: She would be the first Muslim woman elected statewide anywhere in the country. But her faith and ethnicity, she said, are not the driving forces behind her campaign.

Entering the final week of the campaign, candidates for statewide office were in Loudoun County over the weekend working to rally minority voters.

On Saturday, the full Republican ticket was joined by Gov. Glenn Youngkin during a CPAC Latino forum at Ministerio Internacional Mana del Cielo in Sterling.

On Sunday, lieutenant governor candidate Ghazala Hashmi joined a group of Loudoun’s elected leaders and candidates for a Diwali-themed volunteer event that included door-to-door canvasing of neighborhoods in Brambleton.

Both sides highlighted the importance of getting voters to the polls in at a critical time for the commonwealth and the nation.

Another economic development loss for Montgomery County and Maryland is in the books. Not surprisingly, the winner in the latest contest for a corporate headquarters is once again Northern Virginia. ORBCOMM, Inc., currently headquartered in New Rochelle, New Jersey, has announced it will locate its global HQ in Sterling, Virginia, in Loudoun County – not Montgomery County, Maryland. The “internet of things” company is focused on products and services that track, monitor, and control industrial assets around the world. It operates its own network of 31 low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites. ORBCOMM’s clients include Walmart, Caterpillar, Hitachi, Target, Tropicana, Tyson, and Canadian National Railways.

“As we welcome ORBCOMM’s headquarters to Sterling, I wanted to express my sincere gratitude for the significant economic impact this expansion brings to Loudoun County and the Commonwealth,” Virginia State Delegate Atoosa R. Reaser said. “The creation of new jobs is a welcome development and will undoubtedly contribute to the prosperity of our community,” said Delegate Atoosa R. Reaser.

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – Today, elected leaders and Virginians continued the “Worst of Winsome” tour, calling out Sears’ extreme record including her anti-abortion agenda and cheering on the attacks on Virginia jobs and Virginia’s economy.

“I am here today because thirty-three years ago I was able to make my own choices about my health with my own doctor. A woman’s reproductive rights should be her own. We need leaders who understand that and will protect a woman’s right to make her own choices. Winsome Earle-Sears has been clear she won’t do that,” said Jenny Higginbotham, a Virginian with a personal reproductive care story.

“Looking at Winsome Earle-Sears’ extreme record, it’s crystal clear that if she makes it to the Governor’s mansion she won’t fight for Virginians, she’ll just push her extreme agenda forward,” said Senator Saddam Azlan Salim. “From rolling back reproductive rights and supporting a near total abortion ban to backing Trump’s attacks on Virginia jobs and Medicaid to defunding public education and being ‘morally opposed’ to marriage equality, Winsome Earle-Sears is wrong for Virginia.”

“As a representative of Virginia’s 27th District, an area with thousands of federal workers, I know first-hand how harmful Trump’s attacks on Virginia jobs have been,” said Delegate Atoosa Reaser. “For Winsome Earle-Sears to say she doesn’t understand that or why it’s a ‘huge, huge thing’ to lose your job’ is outright dismissive and proves that she can’t be trusted to fight for Virginia.”

Among the efforts of the State and Local Government Policy Clinic, Roland Eberhard ’26 and Madhavi Subramaniam ’26 worked with Del. Atoosa Reaser on two bills requiring school officials to provide information about how to limit access to lethal means and safely store firearms to parents of students believed to be at risk of violence or suicide. They were signed by Gov. Glenn Youngkin on March 24.

To prepare for the session, Eberhard said they made fact sheets to inform delegates about the bills, spoke with lawmakers to gain their support and wrote testimonies to present in committee.

“I learned about many things: the political process in Virginia, how ‘X’ legislation impacts ‘Y’ stakeholders, the importance of having precise language in legislation for it to have the intended effect, why listening to your constituents’ concerns is arguably the most important duty as a politician, the negotiation process between lawmakers when trying to get a bill passed and methods for tailoring legislation for it to have more bipartisan, or partisan, appeal,” he said.

Subramaniam said most firearm-related legislation this year didn’t become law, but the passage of Reaser’s bills shows that lawmakers can find common ground.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of this work was speaking with legislators individually, particularly those who typically oppose gun safety legislation,” she added. “Attempting to bridge these ideological divides during quick, 10-minute meetings was both challenging and exciting, and ultimately successful.”

In her newsletter, Reaser, an attorney herself, praised the contributions of Eberhard and Subramaniam, noting that their efforts helped gain “broad bipartisan support for these measures and built strong coalitions that led to the bills being signed into law.”

Virginia’s legislative season is over, and Gov. Glenn Youngkin has sifted through dozens of bills and issued a record number of vetoes. While the governor vetoed most bills increasing gun safety, he also signed two gun safety measures into law that have flown under the radar: House Bill 2055 and House Bill 2679.

I, along with my chief co-patrons Dels. Michael Feggans and Laura Jane Cohen, championed these bills with one goal in mind: protecting Virginia’s children from needless gun violence. And that’s exactly what these bills do. HB2055 and HB2679 require schools to inform parents of individual students identified as being at risk of suicide or harm to others about existing firearm safe storage obligations and suicide and violence prevention methods. In doing so, these bills target a documented problem that has unfolded throughout Virginia: child suicide and violence.

Moms Demand Action officially endorsed Democratic nominee Abigail Spanberger for Virginia Governor at a rally in Alexandria today (April 10). The event at the Oswald Durant Center drew a couple hundred attendees showing support for the congressional representative’s gubernatorial campaign.

The endorsement comes as Spanberger continues to build momentum in her bid to become Virginia’s next governor. Gun safety advocacy is emerging as a central theme of her campaign.

Delegate Atoosa Reaser spoke about legislative efforts to address gun violence in Virginia, praising Spanberger’s record on the issue during her time in Congress.

“Abigail has been a champion for reasonable gun safety measures that protect Second Amendment rights while keeping dangerous weapons out of the wrong hands,” Reaser said. “That’s exactly the approach Virginia needs from its next governor.”
